Greek Islands: Authentic Greek Cuisine

My husband and I went on a quick road trip (about a 1 1/2 hour drive) to Palm Springs. It was great to see the place again since I hadn't been back there for quite sometime. Mostly I saw palm trees and lots of stores to shop in... but I did come across this Greek restaurant sign. No, we didn't eat here but we managed to go to a fresh seafood restaurant later on that day. It was funny (yet sad) to spot this Justin Bieber sign in a local store window, too. By the way... I've posted 2 Greek recipes on Pinterest Board: Greek Food.

Everything was real nice there, especially seeing the statue of Marilyn Monroe. Plus, the Red Hat Society gals were having a convention in Palm Springs! That was a special treat to see and I especially loved seeing my cousin Peter performing in a local play about a true story. The author of The Yearling was being sued for using the names and backgrounds of local town people in Florida. The play is called, Invasion of Privacy.

Of course, Christmas tea sounds delightful in the cozy blue teapot and a crock pot filled with hot apple cider. I can just smell the cinnamon in the air! A cousin is bringing sparkling apple cider for the children. Whether permitting, we'll be enjoying the outdoors as well.

This charming blue doll house brings back memories. I remember having a miniature china dish set as a child. I would play "kitchen" each and every day! Did you have a doll house or kitchen set to play with?

One Christmas awhile back... well, we had purchased a wonderful kitchen set for our granddaughter. You pull it up and it expands and gets higher as they grow. It remains in her home but when she comes to visit us, I just had to make a cardboard kitchen for Flora to play with, along with these pretty blue plates. Isn't it amazing what things you'll find around the house for children to delight themselves in?!

With 5 grandchildren running about, we'll pause for a "reindeer sandwich."

Whatever you decide to cook for that day (I'm thinking barbecued turkey/honey baked ham), I wish abundant joy and everlasting peace for the coming holiday.

Corn and Green Beans for the Picking

Everything is happening all at once in our garden and the produce is ripe for the picking. I'm just getting ready to can our green pole beans. We've already been sampling some of our corn but here's an earlier photo of our grandson Ryan in a small corn patch with his blue hat on.

Each one of the sprouted vines from the main sweet potato are now broken off and are re-rooting in a shallow dish of water. When the roots are longer, they will be placed in prepared soil to grow much bigger. Later on, one can see purple flowers all over the vines growing everywhere.

So, we started growing more and more sweet potato slips for the garden in my pretty orange kitchen and oh, my goodness... those vines sure took off in the soil beds! Here is the same photo edited with a texture and color boost for Mandarin Orange Monday

Lobsters and Sweet Nectarines

We went to visit my 94 year old mother-in-law. It was great to see her again. She invited us over to get some delicious nectarines from her tree in the backyard. Oh my, such an abundance of fruit this year! Then our sweet daughter who lives in Maine won a giveaway contest for 2 free Maine lobsters. She told me that she had entered my name... Oh my goodness, live lobster delivered to our door! We enjoyed them and had a delicious meal with these bugs! Do you like lobster?

Marinade in olive oil, vinegar, oregano, basil and garlic

A few tips that I recommend are soaking skewers in water before threading to prevent them from catching on fire. Turn frequently. Be sure and thread the shrimp through both ends to prevent spinning or falling off and while you’re at it, don’t forget to spray the grill with a nonstick cooking spray.

Charcoal Barbecue

An outdoor barbecue is our way for my grown kids and grandkids to thank their Dad/Grandpa. What a fun way for children to eat zucchini, bell peppers and mushrooms with rice and maybe some coleslaw. I love shrimp, too. I've made fruit dessert kabobs, sprinkled in coconut flakes, too.

Card Deck of Recipes

I have these recipe cards and my "chef grandson" loves to use them and prepare great snacks!
I wrote a little review about them at Kids-Kitchen. Although this item is not a book, it's my entry this week for Book Sharing Monday

"Kids' Kitchen" is designed to encourage children to cook delicious and nutritious recipes for their friends and family. The 40 recipes are displayed on laminated recipe cards stored in a sturdy box.

Each is color-coded to reflect government guidelines on healthy eating (the Eatwell Plate) promoting a balanced intake of Grains, Fruits, Vegetables, Oils, Milk, Meat and Beans. The 5 colors correspond to these 5 food categories. Tips on how to combine the recipes are also provided in this title.

It features a unique cookery deck that encourages children to prepare fun, tasty and healthy meals and introduces them to recipes from around the world. Recipes are divided into the five main food categories. This title includes 8-page booklet that contains information on the benefits of each food type, practical advice on hygiene and safety and a glossary of cookery terms.

Author Fiona Bird is a Masterchef and the founder of 'Stirrin' Stuff', a charity dedicated to teaching cookery skills and an understanding of nutrition to primary school children. Fiona Bird is mother of six children and winner of Scottish Masterchef 2001. Chocolate Pretzels: Yoga Pretzels!

'Tis the season for gift-giving and I'm on my way to making little token gifts for my students. I found a fun and easy treat to make! Have you made these before? I'm sure you're familiar with them. The creative potential is endless!

This is the first step, starting with a bag of pretzels that are dipped in white chocolate. I decided to go with soft pink and green food coloring. To keep the clean up to a minimum, there are no added frills to the melted chips. (my choice!)
