Heap High the Board

Heap high the board with plenteous cheer,
And gather to the feast,
And toast the sturdy Pilgrim band

Today is William Shakespeare's Birthday! April is also Poetry Month. I love The Barefoot Book of Classic Poems. It is one of my favorites to read because of the choice of authors and lovely illustrations. Here is an example of what's inside:

All the World's a Stage

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players.
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.

Made to his mistress's eyebrow. Then a soldier,

You Will Need:

1 group of children
1 enthusiastic adult
1 rope (6 feet or longer)
1 bag of vegetables

* Show a bag of vegetables. Get them to guess what's in the bag. Finally, show a turnip!
* Read story aloud and ask kids to listen carefully. Next time assign parts.
* You will need 6 yellow canaries, 5 white geese, 4 black cats, 2 pot-bellied pigs, 1 brown cow, 1 old man, 1 old woman and one old mouse.
* Get a rope and the children will line up in order as you call their names aloud, while the turnip is on the other side.
* Discuss who it was that pulled up the turnip!

Matt Harvey: Official Poet in Residence of the 2010 Wimbledon Championships

Matt Harvey, author of Shopping with Dad, is the Official Poet in Residence of the 2010 Wimbledon Championships where he'll be writing about 'the grass, umpires, people having their first Wimbledon strawberries, line judges, day dreams, pressure, Fred Perry's statue, the roof, the falcon and the queue.' I received a lovely package in the mail from my Daughter the other day. Inside the box I found four lovely hardcover Barefoot Books! What a delightful surprise and I jumped into reading Starlight Sailor by Jackie Mayhew and Jackie Morris right away!

Friday Farmer's Market

Yesterday at the Fallbrook Farmer's Market I had a delightful time meeting more beautiful Mom's and wonderful children. It seemed the children were drawn to the many puppets I had made the night before. You know how cute those lions, tigers and bears can be! And I would say my most popular children's books were bought by former school teachers, parents and a bee keeper. Here's a few of yesterday's popular books:
