Book Review: Joy to the World! Christmas Around the Globe

Barefoot Books: Joy To The World! Christmas Around the Globe

Dear Readers,

I was pleasantly surprised to find this beautiful hardcover children's book under the tree! My daughter is a Barefoot Books Ambassador and has her own book store. She's done lots of wonderful things for the company and has always been a strong supporter of children's books.

About The Book:

"Explore Christmas traditions from 13 different countries! Rhyming text and detailed illustrations make the book accessible to younger readers, while educational endnotes about the 13 celebrations add interest for older children. Gold ink and festive illustrations capture the joy of the season and make this book a beautiful gift in itself. Engaging and informative for anyone who wants to learn about the holiday. Features Christmas traditions from: *Ethiopia *Colombia *Australia *Italy *Serbia *Mexico *India *Iceland *Egypt *Argentina *Philippines *Lebanon *Canada."

Review

I really like this one! Such a beautiful classic read for your annual Christmas reading memories! It is beautifully illustrated with gorgeous, bright colored images regarding Christmas traditions around the world. The set of pages have four rhyming lines.

The combined stories explain what Christmas is and they have lots of information about Christmas in each country. I was aware of many cultural celebrations of Christmas around the world, but I didn’t know many of the specifics. Now I know!

My favorite part of the book is at the beginning!

"It's almost Christmas ! A bright time of year for coming together with those we hold dear. Like Mary and Joseph, we joyfully wait. For this special occasion that we celebrate."

Towards the back of the book, the author writes:

"Jesus is born! What a wonderful reason For coming together for this sacred season."

I especially love how the author shares, "What is Christmas?" Indeed, Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus in the Christian faith!

You must check out this particular book, Joy to the World! Christmas Around the Globe by Kate DePalma and Sophie Fatus.

Mother Goose Remembers

goose behind fence

two geese at bates nut farm

While making a quick stop to Bates Nut Farm for some dates, I spotted these geese at the children's petting zoo. Unfortunately, these lovely birds were fenced in and I wondered if my camera lens would focus on them instead of the metal chain link fence. My heart was broken when I looked into the bird's eyes. He seemed to be all alone, honking in pain, "Get me out of here!" Perhaps I threatened him as I moved closer to his guarded territory. After awhile, I noticed there were many birds and soon the whole place escalated with a chorus of boisterous 'bird bonks'! So, I said my goodbyes rather hastily and did manage to rest my lens between the spaces to get better photos later on.

Our grandson is turning 7 and recently went on a road trip to a fabulous place for children and parents. It's a magical community center where families can browse for books and hear live storytelling, music arts and crafts. For those that live on the east coast, have you been there before? Oh, let me share a little bit about the place with you.

About The Book

Many first number books teach pre-school children how to count to ten. This energetic hide-and-seek book goes one step further, helping young readers to count a menagerie of brightly colored felt animals, from one moose to twenty mice. Children will love meeting ladybugs, monkeys, dolphins, and tigers, and there is the added challenge of finding the mischievous ginger cat hiding on every page.

The illustrations are beautiful and counting the animals is fun for the children.

One of my most popular posts was making Music Mouse for the Kindergarten Music Class! It was a paper plate filled with rice for a musical tambourine. If interested, visit Meet Music Mouse

Thinking about mice reminds me of another story called Merry Mouse. Have you heard it before?

Merry Mouse by Jill M. Coudron

Once upon a time there was a mouse named Merry. Merry lived with Mama Mouse in a mushroom patch on Monster Mountain.

Merry and Mama were mail mice. They delivered mail to each mouse hole on Monster Mountain. Sometimes they had mail for Mr. Monster, who lived at the very top of the mountain.

One Monday morning, Merry woke up to find marks all over his body - red, scratchy, uncomfortable marks! What was the matter with Merry? Mama Mouse had never seen marks like these. Merry felt miserable.

Merry and Mama decided to climb Monster Mountain to see Mr. Monster. He was kind and wise and could solve anyone's problems. Since it was a mile to the top of the mountain, Mama and Merry rested in the middle.

"My, my," said Mr. Monster as he rubbed his mustache and looked Merry over. "M-M-M-M-M...," he said, as he checked Merry's marks. (Make the sound of the letter M.) Mr. Monster finally said, "Merry, you have the measles!"

Mr. Monster mixed some medicine for Merry to take until the marks disappeared. He also gave Merry special mittens to wear to keep from scratching. The mittens had Ms on them. He told Merry to get lots of rest until Monday morning came again. Mama and Merry thanked Mr. Monster and went back down the mountain to get Merry well again. Mama delivered the mail alone each day while Merry rested.

When Monday morning came again, Merry looked in the mirror and saw that his marks were gone. He called, "Mama, Mama, my marks are missing!"

To thank Mr. Monster for making Merry well, Mama and Merry made muffins, and took them up the mountain to him. As they munched on the muffins, they all said, "M-M-M-M-M-M!"

I've seen a real moose in Maine and Utah before; such a spectacular sight. Around the holidays and especially in toy stores, you'll find some moose dolls and puppets for the children. Photo for Mandarin Orange Monday

An Italian Family Christmas

table setting

family dinner

In my kitchen, surrounded with a blue curtain and blue placemat, folks gathered around the tables with moustaches and Burger King crowns for a family Christmas. One of our daughters came down with our special granddaughter the day after Christmas. Our son and his family joined us this year and we were able to do FaceTime with our other daughter and family. Technology is so wonderful for reuniting families. Do you use Skype? Photos for Blue Monday

Italian lasagna

Fortunately, Costco has large quantities of party food and supplies for purchase. I made my special sauce with our own canned tomatoes, homemade pesto and herbs, with Italian sausage. There were no vegans this year. All the pans of lasagna were assembled Christmas Eve night, so our hot meal was ready to enjoy, along with garlic bread and salad within 30 minutes. I love lasagna. How about you?

appetizers
Starting to set out the appetizers, I served several dipping sauces for garlic bread, along with Brie and apple slices, meatballs, shrimp ring and poppers. We all were grazing on munchies around noon.

Italian soda on the menu

I picked the "Italian Grapefruit" on Christmas morning...

"Il mio nome e Giorgio Pompelmo.  Che piacere visitare la vostra fattoria.  Grazie tanto y Buon Natale!"

Translation: "My name is Giorgio Grapefruit.  What a pleasure to visit your farm!  Thanks so much, and Merry Christmas!"

Funny thing is that the lasagna is overpriced. If 1 euro = $1.32, then no one is going to pay $30. for a portion of the main course. We all chuckled over this but fortunately, today the Christmas dinner was free! lol Photo for Mellow Yellow Monday

Barefoot Books The Genius of Leonardo

Bimba Landmann's richly colored iconographic illustrations both illuminate this stunning life of Leonardo and create an air of mystery around this far-reaching genius. At once instructive and entertaining, the story is told by ten-year-old Giacomo, who comes to respect, love, and learn from Leonardo, his wise and eccentric master. The many facets of this towering genius of Renaissance Italy are explored in a book that will inspire everyone to search for their own greatness within.

A great biography with beautiful illustrations for children 7 years old - adult; a wonderful book!

Bird, Book and Candle

blue bird by fountain

I was so surprised to look outside my piano studio window and find some visiting birds in our fountain, especially this beautiful male bluebird, sialia mexicana

As farmers, we welcome bluebirds for their beneficial properties because we need them to rid the garden of insect pets! Perhaps my husband will want to build boxes with a sloped roof to help them build their nests. Do you have a bird house or bird feeder in your yard? If so, what type of bird visits your area? I love birds, especially the sound that a red tail hawk makes. Photo for Blue Monday

yellow golden finch

The American Goldfinch, is a small North American bird (Wild Canary) known in the Finch family Here he is nestled in our Crepe Myrtle Tree that has lost all its leaves for now. We're very happy to see their arrival around the running water in our fountain, and on the avocado tree limbs. Photo for Mellow Yellow Monday

Our Crepe Myrtle Tree in our back yard hasn't lost all of its leaves yet. Although it's nothing like "the turning of the leaves" in New England, we sure get a thrill seeing this fall color amidst our many Palm Trees throughout our ranch. Photo for Mandarin Orange Monday

homemade beeswax candles

Along time ago, I had won a candle kit giveaway by atoygarden.com from a fellow blogger. There were 12 sheets of 8" x 8" of beeswax and 4 yards of cotton wicks. I finally had a moment to roll them out with the help of my grandson. Don't you think they'll make lovely stocking stuffers?

The Beeman children's picture book

Although this is temporarily out of stock on Amazon, there are used ones for sale. I remember selling a lot of these books to teachers who had a "bee unit" to cover. This is a very educational book with rhyming text. I really like this one, especially because we once were bee keepers. Do you like honey?
