Ideas on How to Celebrate Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day! (Tomorrow)

* Earth Day Poems and Songs

Here is a collection of Earth Day songs. I hope you can use them at home, in your classroom or your daycare to help the children celebrate Earth Day. My favorite is Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

These are some simple examples that can be discussed:
Recycle: We should not throw cans, bottles and newspapers into landfills. These items can be recycled. Don't throw those shoe boxes away -- they can become toy dioramas or doll houses. Discuss how these items get recycled.
Reuse: We don't always need a new piece of paper or a new t-shirt. We can try to reuse what we already have. We can help keep trash out of the landfills. How can a piece of paper be reused? Example: We can use the comics to use as wrapping paper, print the templates in this web site on the blank/clean side of junk mail or other discarded paper material. How can a T-shirt be reused - many pieces of fabric from T-shirts can make a great quilt!
Reduce - Every home can reduce the amount of waste/garbage it produces and the landfills would last years longer. Composting is one way of reducing -- explain how you can help and/or are helping to reduce.

In this re-release with a newly recorded singalong CD featuring Susan Reed, this exquisite, hand-sewn anthology showcases Clare Beaton's wonderful treasure trove of fabrics and bric-a-brac. We’ve paired it with a collection of forty popular action rhymes includes favorites such as “I’m a Little Teapot” and “The Wheels On The Bus,” as well as less familiar ditties such as “Fishes Swim in Water Clear” and “My Ship Sailed From China.”

Incy Wincy Spider
One Potato, Two Potato
Tinker, Tailor
I'm a Little Teapot
Heads and Shoulders
Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush
The Wheels on the Bus
The Farmer's in his Den
If You're Happy and You Know It

Many of my beginner students have enjoyed playing the song, The Wheels On The Bus" or "Bus Song" on the piano. It's fun to play and sing-a-long with the tune in Middle C position. This delightful book of rhymes and beautiful illustrations by Clare Beaton, comes with CD to enjoy! Did I mention Susan Reed does the singing? She's fabulous!

Recent praise:

"Finch has selected a plethora of lap games, finger plays, and action rhymes for adults to share with young children.... [T]he cuddliness will appeal to parents as the detailing intrigues young viewers. Make room on the parenting shelf for this one." - Bulletin for the Center of Children's Books

Now, I've saved the best for last! As a quilter and book lover, I am very fond of Clare Beaton's work. I love her world of felt, stitches, colors, hearts and buttons. Have a bird's eye view of her style!

I give this book 5+ stars! Why you ask? Well, Clare Beaton draws you in with Row, row, row the boat for starters and encourages you to sit on the floor facing each other in pairs feet touching and holding hands and sway backwards and forwards. Every child will be delighted to do so! She ends the book with If You're Happy and You Know It, encouraging clap, stomp and shout! In between are glorious chapters like One, Two, Buckle My Shoe. This rhyme is to encourage kids to clean their plates. The pair of numbers represents a mouthful! Plus, you'll be wiggling your toes to This Is The Man That Broke The Barn...enjoy and happy reading!

April is Poetry Month

April is poetry month!
Yes, the month is half over, but I wanted to share a few Barefoot Books that I recommend for reading this month... April is a great month! Earth Day, Turn off Your Television Week, National Poetry Month...

One of my favorite poems:
i carry your heart with me
by E. E. Cummings
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

I did a post on my favorite Barefoot Book "Classic Poems" awhile back.

I loved the illustrations so much that I used a spectacular picture, The Owl and the Pussycat, for another one of my book blog headers!

Poems About Time

Compiled by: Nikki Siegen-Smith
Illustrated by: Giovanni Manna
Today I'm going yesterday as quickly as I can

A diverse range of poets have lent their voices to this collection, including Philip Larkin, Derek Walcott, Eleanor Farjeon and Carol Freeman. Each offers us a new and unexpected way of perceiving time, be it through the seasons, the cycle of life marked by anniversaries and personal milestones, or the simple comfort of daily rituals. The result is an inspiring compilation that will fill your head with new ideas about our collective journey through the minutes, hours, days and years of our lives. Giovanni Manna's sunny watercolor artwork adds a human dimension to the poems, introducing an enchanting cast of characters who capture a complexity of emotions.

First Morning contains works by the following poets:

John Agard
John Cunliffe
Eleanor Farjeon
Max Fatchen
Philip Larkin
Phyllis McGinley
Roger McGough
Derek Walcott

Recent praise:

"As a concept of both beginning and end, as endless and scarce, as ordinary and spectacular, and as something precious to be cherished, the notion of time is explored in this collection of poems by a rich variety of poets.... Siegen-Smith's latest anthology will nudge readers to ponder the meaning of time, and will give teachers and parents alike a means of helping children understand this difficult concept. Manna's watercolor-and-ink illustrations perfectly fit each poem, whether humorous, profound, sweet, or inspirational. The soft colors and details suggest mood and delightfully enhance the meaning inherent in the verse. A great collection to share with a child. And who knows - perhaps the time spent would be remembered as a special day worthy of its own poem." - Kirkus Reviews

Earth Tales- The Sunday Times' Book of the Week Pick!

Earth Tales was The Sunday Times' Book of the Week Pick!

From The Sunday Times
April 5, 2009
The Barefoot Book of Earth Tales by Dawn Casey and Anne Wilson
The Sunday Times review by Nicolette Jone
Ages 8-12
"This attractive book marries ancient wisdom with modern environmentalism, collecting seven tales from around the world and telling us how to take care of the earth. A Nigerian folk tale about people who ate the sky teaches us not to consume more than we need. A native American story of a lonely girl’s prized possession suggests we may have to make sacrifices for the general good. A Welsh fable about an elderly couple, their slop bucket and the fairies in their garden encourages us not to dump rubbish. The stories are interspersed with environmentally friendly crafts and activities, such as how to make a corn dolly. The book’s greatest charm is in the bright, decorative illustrations that borrow from primitive art, and in the flashes of imagination in the stories: that bats and stick insects, for instance, came about because envious and dissatisfied mice and insects chose to resemble birds and twigs (Barefoot Books £14.99)"

"One of the best childrens books I have ever read! Marvellously written, with powerful illustrations and a vital moral message for young readers today."
Claire L, London, U.k

In this beautiful anthology of folktales, young readers learn how different cultures around the world live in harmony with the rhythms and patterns of nature. Discover how to tread lightly on our precious Earth by following the easy eco-tips and trying out some of the fun and creative activities that accompany each story
