Tony's On The Pier

Redondo Beach Restaurant
"Tony's on the pier" is a wonderful restaurant, along with so many others that you will find in one location.  It is like a mini shopping mall, including a fish market with a tank full of crabs.
I just love seafood. How about you?

I was visiting a cousin over the weekend and took this photo for Blue Monday.

Redondo Beach Harbor and Pier
Aside from restaurants and hotels, there is excellent fishing off the pier. I'm pretty sure in the state of California, a fishing license is not required to fish off the pier. The pier itself is so wide that it looks like a huge slab for a dance floor. You'll find jazz concerts held there during summer months. What does your pier like where you live? Ours is long and narrow with only one restaurant on the pier and a few around the harbor.

Portside Pirates: Barefoot Books Publishers

This paperback book and pirate activity sticker book,  is quite popular with my 3 grandsons. What I particularly like is that the stickers are reusable, so you will lots of activity time together. To see some pirate pictures and more information regarding the children's book, visit a former blog post, Childrens Books About Pirates

In 2010 I had a little time to experiment in iMovie on my computer. So I put together some slides and created the above video. I've got a grandson's birthday coming up in a few months so the pirate theme will be so much fun!

Happy reading and have a great Monday! I'm participating in the following memes:

I love chicken dishes seasoned with rosemary!

Roasted Vegetable Rosemary Chicken Soup
(Bev Jones, Brunswick, Missouri,   JANUARY 2006)

  • cup (1-inch) cubed carrot
  • 1 cup (1-inch) cubed onion
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped mushrooms
  • 1 cup (1-inch) pieces celery
  • 1 cup (1-inch) pieces red bell pepper
  • 2 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 (14-ounce) cans fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth $
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 2 cups uncooked whole wheat rotini pasta

Preparation

Preheat oven to 375°.

Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl; drizzle with oil, and toss well to coat. Arrange vegetable mixture in a single layer on a jelly-roll pan lined with foil. Bake at 375° for 50 minutes or until browned, stirring occasionally.

Combine water and next 5 ingredients (through chicken) in a large Dutch oven; bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes. Add roasted vegetables; simmer 30 minutes. Bring soup to a boil. Add pasta; simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

To have Rosemary Peasant Bread, along with homemade soup sounds yummy, too!

I did a post awhile back on Barefoot Books Kid's Kitchen. They offer a neat box of recipe cards for children, mostly vegan recipes, you can get here.

Do you have a favorite recipe that includes rosemary?

I would have to say, Duck Soup by Jackie Urbanovic, is one of my favorites! I posted a book review on my other blog and a recipe for a Greek soup recipe at LadyD Books.

Katie Kazoo

Kazoos for Kindergarten Music Class

This is a very easy craft to make, in no time at all! First, I asked the parents to save empty toilet paper rolls. Then I covered them with scrap book paper. I used Zotz instead of glue to hold the seam together. You'll need to use a paper punch for the hole on when end of the tube. You can experiment with the sound and add more, if you like. Then I cut out a circle of wax paper larger than the end of the roll. I found that thin rubber bands work best in securing the wax paper. You'll want to make sure the wax paper is on tight and most important of all, cut the wax paper a little bit over the hole. That way you're creating an airspace.

What is a Kazoo you ask? It's a toy musical instrument with a membrane that produces a buzzing sound when a player hums or sings into the mouthpiece. Back in my day, we used a plastic comb and a piece of wax paper. Now, you can find plastic kazoos at the Dollar Store. This was fun to make for the children. We will have a ball practicing and singing our Patriotic Songs with Kazoos. It will sound just dandy!

At the end of the video, you will hear a demonstration of the audio for a Kazoo. This week we will be working on "This Land Is Your Land," "I've Been Working on the Railroad," and "Erie Canal." These cute songs remind me of another Barefoot Book, available in paperback with CD.

Blue Monday: The Pacific Ocean

Paddle Board, West Coast - Pacific Ocean
I hope you will stop by Blue Monday for more wonderful photos of the color Blue.
Lifeguard Truck - Oceanside Harbor
Yellow is a happy color and you'll find lots more of this color at Mellow Yellow Monday

Each week I try to incorporate a few of my photos along with books that I am reading to my grandchildren. We seem to have gathered quite a few board books and picture books along the way for our personal, home library. Not to mention visiting our local library once a week, provides lots of reading material for our family.

We've had some lovely weather lately, so we always enjoy a walk along the harbor and my camera always goes with me. I was fortunate to see this lone paddle boarder surrounded by the deep blue sea, along with a community service truck ready to rescue, just in case.
