A-Hunting We Will Go

A-Hunting We Will Go: Barefoot Books-LadyD

Here on the ranch, we have lots of trees in the grove for kids to climb on. Hiding under the rocks, boys can find tons of scampering bugs. The great outdoors beckons all of my 5 grandchildren to play outdoors. One song that comes to mind is A-Hunting We Will Go and then, of course, Little White Duck. I'm sure you've heard them before!

Awhile back I reviewed a fantastic book, Paper Sack PuppetsPuppetry is an old and respected art form but it is also just plain fun. This book presents dozens of original patterns for a particular kind of puppet--those made from paper sacks. Those brown (or white) paper bags generations of students have used to tote lunch to school prove to be an inexpensive base on which to create puppets that can be used to teach as well as entertain. Along with the patterns are related activities, music, poems, book lists, and games. Chock full of great ideas and clear instructions, the book will become a valuable resource for teachers, librarians, and parents.

Paper Sack Puppets: 60+ Easy Patterns and Activities for Librarians, Teachers and Parents

Happy reading and singing!

You don't want to miss out on "Hedgie wants to be a blue angel coloring page."

Wikipedia says:

"The name 'hedgehog' came into use around the year 1450, derived from the Middle English 'heyghoge', from 'heyg', 'hegge' = hedge, because it frequents hedgerows, and 'hoge', 'hogge' = hog, from its piglike snout. Other names include 'urchin', 'hedgepig' and 'furze-pig'."

National Geographic Kids has some facts and photos about these interesting hedgehogs at http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/animals/creaturefeature/hedgehog/

Eye of the Tiger

Tiger Puppet: Barefoot Books-LadyD

Tiger Puppet

What you'll need:

  • Paper lunch bag
  • Orange and black paint
  • Black marker
  • Black, white, and orange construction paper
  • Gold paint pen
  • Scissors
  • 1 black chenille stem
  • White craft glue
  • Glue stick
  • Pattern

How to make it:

Paint outside of paper bag with orange paint and let dry.

On a piece of black construction paper, use the gold paint pen to draw 2 circles, about 1 inch in diameter.

Cut around the circles, leaving a border of black paper, cut each end out to a point to resemble the almond shape of an eye. Use the pattern for the eyes as a guide.

Dip the handle end of a paint brush into black paint and using a circular motion, at the round blacks of the eyes onto the gold. Let dry.

When bag is dry, add tiger stripes around the bottom of the bag (the head) and down both sides. Add a nose and facial features as well. Use the pattern as inspiration for drawing on the face. Use black paint to fill in the stripes.

While paint is drying, cut the ears and paws out of orange construction paper using the patterns. Color in the center of the ears with black marker. Use a glue stick to attach the ears to the back of the bag and the paws to the front.

Cut two teeth from white paper and use a glue stick to attach them beneath the flap.

Glue the eyes to the face using a glue stick.

Cut chenille stem in to four pieces and use white craft glue to attach two to each side of the face. Let dry.

Tiger Bread

Tiger bread is made with sesame oil and with a pattern baked into the top made by painting rice paste onto the surface prior to baking. The paste dries and cracks during the baking process, creating a two-color effect similar to a tiger; hence the name. The rice paste crust also gives the bread a distinctive flavor. It has a crusty exterior, but is soft inside, making it difficult to slice. Typically, Tiger bread is made as a white bread bloomer loaf or bread roll, but the technique can be applied to any shape of loaf. In the United States it is also known as dutch crunch bread.
Recipe

The bread mix is standard but the clever bit is the topping, I found one recipe for it, however it is commercial sized so you will need to proportion it down to size, this is to go with 5Kg of flour!

Rice Flour 1 1/2 Kg
Water 1 1/2 Kg
Sugar 90 grm
Vegetable Oil 75 grm
Salt 30grm
Fresh Yeast 30grm (or 1 sachet Instant)

Mix all ingredients for the Tiger Skin together till smooth - set aside
Make your usual white bread, mould or tin it, spread tiger mix evenly on top of dough, prove for about 55 minutes, bake at 200 deg for about 55 minutes or until cooked.

Buzzing with The Bee Puppet

This Easter one of my Grandsons discovered a Bee Puppet in his basket. He was overjoyed and delighted to play with it. What fun. This particular Folkmanis puppet will be in stock April 3oth, 2011.

Bee Puppet

Buzz along with this handcrafted puppet. The plush bee is designed atop a glove that becomes the wiggly legs, and sheer wings and antennae adorn the top.
Ages 5 to 8 years
Produced By: Folkmanis
In Stock: 4/30/11

Along with this cute puppet that fits like a glove for either left or right hand, is an educational paperback that is currently on sale for $5.99. I have sold The Beeman to many teachers of Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade at local Farmer's Markets.

The Beeman

Find out where honey comes from as Grandpa the Beeman teaches the basics of beekeeping to his young grandson. This rhyming story includes endnotes full of essential facts about bees, beekeeping, honey, and the vital part that bees play in the natural world.
Ages 5 to 9 years
Written By: Laurie Krebs
Illustrated By: Valeria Cis

At the back of the book, you'll find a delicious muffin recipe made with honey, of course! The child narrator describes the gear used by the beekeeper, the process of honey production and the behavior of bee and their colony. End notes provide further information about the bee's place in our ecosystem.

From pollination to bee dancing, this is a 5* children's book with the following poem included in the rhyming text, plus great illustrations.

There wouldn’t be sunflowers,
Wouldn’t be peas,
Wouldn’t be apples,
On apple trees,
If it weren’t for fuzzy old,
Buzzy old bees
Dusting pollen
From off their knees.

~Aileen Fischer

Little Talk
Don't your think it's probable
that beetles, bugs, and bees
talk about a lot of things
you know, such things as these:

The kind of weather where they live
in jungles tall with grass
and earthquakes in their villages
whenever people pass!

Of course, we'll never know if bugs
talk very much at all,
because our ears are far too big
for talk that is so small.
The Beeman by Laurie Krebs. First published in 2002, this picture book reappears with nearly the same text but a new look. A beekeeper introduces his grandson to bees and honey production; the book now opens with Aileen Fisher’s fine, short poem “Bees” and concludes with six nicely illustrated pages of information about these distinctive insects, their development from egg to adult, bee colonies, aspects of beekeeping techniques and equipment, honey, pollination, and bee “dancing.” Pre-school to 2nd grade. Craft Fun Felt Finger Puppets for Kid's Play

Provided By: Associated Content, Inc.

Children love to make simple crafts. They also love engaging in dramatic, creative play. A perfect way to combine these two loves is by letting your kids craft fun felt finger puppets. Easy to create and fun to play with, these finger puppets will provide hours of entertainment.

Different Characters and How to Make Them

1. Princess

A princess finger puppet can be made from pink felt fabric. Long blonde hair is a classic image for a princess as well. To really make the finger puppet look regal, you might like to add a ring of silver wire, ribbon, or other trim for a crown. To make a princess gown, you can use a piece of gathered lace as a fancy skirt.

MiniFox Puppet

Fox Finger Puppet

Can you outwit a sly fox in the forest? This clever finger puppet is four inches long.
Ages 3 to 8 years
Produced By: Folkmanis
Purchase $7.99 at Puppets

 2. Lion

A lion finger puppet should be made out of tan or golden colored felt. Cutting a fringed mane out of brown or orange felt is a good idea. You can glue it around the drawn on face. Make sure to make the face look like a cat face with a triangle nose and whiskers. You can also glue on a long golden tail at the back for more realism.

Mini Owl Barn Puppet

Owl Finger Puppet

Perch this spotted owl on your finger and see if he shares some wisdom. This finger puppet is four inches tall.
Ages 3 to 8 years
Produced By: Folkmanis
$6.99 Finger Puppet

3. Scary Witch

A witch finger puppet would be fashioned from black or another dark colored felt. Straggly black hair and perhaps a green face would look great on this one. You can fashion a pointed witch hat out of sturdy black paper and glue it on the top of the head.

Bunny Rabbit Finger Puppet

Bunny Rabbit Finger Puppet

Hop, hop, hop through the flowers! This adorable two-toned bunny finger puppet is five inches long.
Ages 3 to 8 years
Produced By: Folkmanis
Price $7.99 My Marketplace

4. Rabbit

Making a felt finger puppet rabbit is another cute idea. Rabbits can be white, grey, or brown and should have long ears, pink noses, and white bellies. Gluing a small white pom-pom to the back for a cotton tail is a great idea.

Mini Moose Puppet

Moose Finger Puppet

Explore the snowy north with this chocolate brown moose. This finger puppet is six inches long.
Ages 3 to 8 years
Produced By: Folkmanis
$7.99  Store

5. Super Hero

Craft a super hero finger puppet in bright blue and red felt. Make sure to put on a gold ribbon belt and a super hero symbol on the chest. Use a piece of thinner fabric or felt to make a cape down the back. Instead of hair, you might want the super hero puppet to have a brightly colored helmet on.
Kids love to craft and play with these fun felt finger puppets. With different colors of felt and their imaginations, they can create different characters and whole different dramatic plays with them. With the simple materials and easy instructions, this is one craft that needs limited supervision.
