What Shapes Do You See?

Ships At Sea: Barefoot Books-LadyD

One of the cool things about visiting Santa Barbara is discovering exciting ocean liners and sailboats!

"All aboard! Come along with me! Let's see what shapes we can find on the sea."

Out At Sea: Barefoot Books-LadyD

I have four charming grandsons and they love to look out on the water and talk about the movement out at sea. Oh, how we love our beautiful Pacific Ocean! Our boys are mesmerized by the size and shapes of the vessels that ride upon the sea!

Sailboats: Barefoot Books-LadyD

At Oceanside Harbor, we have the opportunity to walk around the jetty, admire all the boats and then head to the playground for some fun!

As I reflected on some of the photos, I was reminded of a cool book called Ship Shapes for children, ages 1-4. This exciting book is available in paperback and sturdy board book. The author Stella Blackstone has written many other books as well.

About The Book

Spot the shapes atop rolling waves and on sandy shores. This sea-based early learning selection features rhyme and repetition, as well as a full-page summarizing the shapes for reinforced learning.

My Thoughts

One particular grandson, our Riley who is 4-years-old, loves to engage in the learning activity of identifying triangles and rectangles. He gets excited when he points to the boats and counts aloud how many there are. The best part of the book is the colorful illustrations. Plus, you will see a sea monster's tail, a green submarine, and beautiful island treasure. This is a fun book for preschool.

Happy Summer!

Reading Monster: Dino Tales

Photo Edit of Reading Monster

Here's my photo shop contribution for Coloring Page Tuesdays

I started with the image below drawn by Elizabeth Dulemba. This is so cute with the dinosaur reading a dino tale upon a stack of books! My 4 grandson's are happy campers with this inspiring image to encourage reading!

Then I added some nature texture, like these green leaves with multiply layer. The finished product was adding a radiant shine layer in the first photo.

There's a celebration going on right now... It's Picture Book Month for November. On the calendar is "Heidiey Stemple - Dinosaurs." For more information, visit Heidiey Stemple's Bio. I'm not familiar with the author but I do know Barefoot Books favors dinosaurs and here are some of my former posts on the subject.

1. Dino Island

2. Meeting The Blue Dino

3. Dragons and Monsters

4. I Dreamt I Was A Dinosaur

By the way, I was featured at Dulemba ColoringPages! A special thanks to a very talented illustrator/author Elizabeth Dulemba for choosing the photo shop "Reading Fox."

Happy Reading!

Blue Monday: The Pacific Ocean

Paddle Board, West Coast - Pacific Ocean
I hope you will stop by Blue Monday for more wonderful photos of the color Blue.
Lifeguard Truck - Oceanside Harbor
Yellow is a happy color and you'll find lots more of this color at Mellow Yellow Monday

Each week I try to incorporate a few of my photos along with books that I am reading to my grandchildren. We seem to have gathered quite a few board books and picture books along the way for our personal, home library. Not to mention visiting our local library once a week, provides lots of reading material for our family.

We've had some lovely weather lately, so we always enjoy a walk along the harbor and my camera always goes with me. I was fortunate to see this lone paddle boarder surrounded by the deep blue sea, along with a community service truck ready to rescue, just in case.

Books About Bears

A Bear Wagon: Marilyn Scott Waters
It seems everyone of my grandchildren have held these delightful books about bears at one time or another. They love to see the bears in different professions as they head off to work. My grand kids from ages 5 on down play with bear puzzles and games, and coloring activities. How about your family?

I could go on and on about the other bear books published by Barefoot Books but here are 5 for today that come from a winning team of Blackstone and Harter.

My Marketplace

Head off to work with Bear as he delivers mail and learns about other professions. Rhythm and rhyme drive the clever text, and a full-spread illustration of the professions at the end reinforces the learning and invites readers to go back through the story to spot the different working bears.

Board Book-Paperback for $6.99
Discover lots of different shapes with Bear — there are triangles on the waves, diamonds on the crown and stars in the sky. Rhyme, repetition and counting establish this book of shapes, and a two-page spread recapping the shapes and colors reinforces the educational building blocks.

Bear On A Bike-Board Book and Paperback

There are so many wonderful things to point out on each page when you ride about with this adorable, cuddly Bear with a repetition and poetic flow of the story. This is a favorite of preshoolers.

Bear In Sunshine available in Board Book and Paperback
Enjoy the seasons with Bear, as he partakes in a different activity for each kind of weather. The rhyme and humor of the text help to introduce the concepts, and a two-page spread of the four seasons offers a recap at the end.

The newest addition to the Barefoot Books series is:

Bears Birthday-Paperback-Written By: Stella Blackstone and Illustrated By: Debbie Harter
This book is about joining Bear as he celebrates his birthday.  Children can help Bear count backwards from 10 to 0 and find out who is making his balloons disappear. The text and colorful pages are best for ages 2 to 6 years.

Surrey Bikes

Surrey Bikes

I came across these brightly colored surrey bikes for pedaling around the beach. This is a fun way to soak up beautiful surroundings. It's always a refreshing time and a memorable one to head towards the beach, take a walk on the pier along the harbor and see the bikes pass us by.

A single surrey costs $20.00 in rental fees.

Double surrey will be $30.00 for rental fee.

Have you ever been on one? I have not had this experience yet.

One of the best sites I have found online for personal safety and bike riding tips for kids is Tips For Tourists

Perhaps you are familiar with Barefoot Books "Bears"series.

About Bear on a Bike

Join Bear as he tries out different forms of transport and has an adventure with each one. Rhyme and repetition support the learning layers of travel and transportation, as Bear travels in a raft, a rocket ship, a boat, a bike, a steam train, and a carriage.
