Wikipedia says:

"The name 'hedgehog' came into use around the year 1450, derived from the Middle English 'heyghoge', from 'heyg', 'hegge' = hedge, because it frequents hedgerows, and 'hoge', 'hogge' = hog, from its piglike snout. Other names include 'urchin', 'hedgepig' and 'furze-pig'."

Superhero Cape

Every year Santa Barbara has a Summer Solstice Parade. This balloon at the end of the parade reminded me of the following books. Barefoot Books- LadyD is participating in Mellow Yellow Monday.

Journey around the world and to the stars in our new Up, Up, Up! animated video with audio singalong.

Enjoy an aerial view of the planet when you set sail in a hot-air balloon with three children and their inquisitive dog. Sung by Susan Reed. From the book and CD illustrated by Rachel Oldfield, available at http://ladyd.barefootbooks.com

There's another book I picked up from our local library from the Dial Easy - To - Read Level 3 series, Oliver The Mighty Pig by Jean Van Leeuwen. Darling book about a family who loves Oliver, whether he is wearing his cape or not.

"Who has a long red cape and is able to fly? Mighty Pig, of course!"

Oliver the Mighty Pig (Easy-to-Read, Dial)Children's Humorous Literature)

I'm planning on making some cool capes for my grandsons and granddaughter. It's been awhile since I made a Superman cape for my son.  I was wondering if you had sewn a cape before and if so, what type of fabric did you use? I suppose anything from silk to a bath towel or bed sheet would be fun to hold onto and run around with! lol

Blue Monday: Aquarium Fish

I am participating in Blue Monday, with our hostess http://smilingsally.blogspot.com/

Our grandson was visiting an aquarium on the east coast and as you can see,  he was totally into it!

These photos reminded me of a book review I posted awhile back.

Sail On Sailor!

January 16, 2010

Colorful, Bedtime, Great illustrations, rhyming, fantasy, dragon
Starlight Sailor is a wonderful story. The soft rhyming tells a lovely, dreamy tale and opens with:
"Star light, star bright,
First star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have the wish I wish tonight."
The illustrations are magical - a timeless classic! You'll see blue whales, bluebirds, knights and kings along this journey of fantasy and pretend. Even the red and gold dragon is a nice gentle dragon, flying here and there, taking children everywhere! The starfish and mermaids singing their lullaby are sure to put any young child fast to sleep. So dream on little ones of flying fish dancing in the sky! A perfect bedtime book!

Another delightful large format board book with breath-taking illustrations is, I Spy the Sun in the Sky. We have this one on our book shelf. I have 3 grandchildren under the age of 4, so this is a hit with them. It's quality with durable, heavy cardboard pages and a simple story to follow along.  An interactive book for "spying" objects on the pages! My Marketplace

It's truly amazing what one can find under the sea looking at the above photo. I can just picture a children's bedroom decorated in an ocean theme. What treasure have you brought back from the sea?

Happy Blue Monday!

KNIGHTTIME
"Each week The Hazardous Players offers up a new chapter in the adventures of good Sir Cottington and Sir Bratwurst.  Listen as they reluctantly stumble their way through the land of Udenland, while trying to avoid being eaten by any number of terrifying beasts. Along the way they meet several of the eccentric members of Udenland society who more often than not, prove a greater challenge than the terrifying beasts.
Fortunately for the knights they have with them the Henchwoods Guides, the essential guides for identifying the myriad of creatures and plants which pose a threat to their safety and generally well being.  Regularly the guide is updated with illustrations and facts about new discoveries, including everything from migration habits to the best way to avoid being eaten (usually involves running)."

Over in the Meadow

 Blue Monday

I am always on the look out for new books with catchy tunes for my 4 grandchildren to enjoy. I have found a real gem from the Barefoot Books Publishers that you will love. I must forewarn you, once you watch the video, you will definitely want to join in and sing along over and over!

Over in the Meadow

Susan Reed's catchy adaptation of this traditional English song explores all kinds of creatures who live over in the meadow. With notes on meadows and the furry mice, bumpy toads and other wildlife in the story.

Enhanced CD edition includes an animated video and audio singalong sung by Susan Reed.
Ages 3 to 6 years

Illustrated By: Jill McDonald

"Jill McDonald created the beautiful Over in the Meadow illustrations by painting her background scenes and animals as separate collage pieces, scanning each one and compiling the final compositions in Photoshop. This gave a unique look to the finished animation. Learning from this experience, when we commissioned our latest singalong book, we specifically asked for the art to be painted in layers to facilitate creating the animation."
